Communicating Green Initiatives
(3 credits)

Seminar Description (J840)
"Communication about the environment matters. It matters in the naming of the conditions that we take to be problems, but it also matters in the ways we interact with our communities, our workplaces and the natural world."    Robert Cox

Environmental storytelling has expanded from discussions of land conservation to explorations of ways the natural world encompasses and affects every aspect of our lives: from national security to economy prosperity, conservation to civil rights, public health to personal well-being. The course will provide practical tools for the effective communication of pressing issues including energy, food, waste and climate change.

Together, we will explore various styles of environmental communications in public relations, marketing, education, news, outreach and policy.  We will analyze campaigns that promote eco-efficiencies in the workplace, serve the public interest, and support the sustenance of our planet and develop materials that can be implemented outside of the classroom. The course will include distance learning lectures, field work, and the use of blogs and other social networking tools.

Communicating Green Initiatives is open to all students with a sincere interest in environmentalism. Prior knowledge of environmental science is not required.
